BRAW: Files For Download

Blackmagic Raw has been a pretty hot topic in the film world since its release. Everyone is writing about BRAW but it’s hard to know what it is actually like to work with unless you have already purchased a Blackmagic camera that actually shoots it.

Buying a new camera is a big financial commitment so I thought it would be useful for those people wanting to try before they buy to get their hands on some files before going ahead with a purchase. There will be a Dropbox link at the end of this post, no strings attached. You are welcome.

Shooting Raw is great for the flexibility it allows when colour grading and it also gives a rich depth of colour, especially when compared to the 8 bit files of DSLRs like the A7sii that some people will be used to working with. If you download the files and want to have a play with them but work with software that doesn’t support Raw then get the free version of Blackmagic’s Davinci Resolve. You can do loads with the free version, it’s amazing.

I recently shot a chilli eating episode of the food show I do with a friend called The Taste Plug (Follow us on Facebook if you like it!) and thought a few of these files would be good to give out to the world. Most of this episode was filmed on Sony A7sii cameras with the URSA being used sparingly for just a few shots at the start and the locked off wide at the table.

The 6 I am giving out raw files are all: 4.6K, 100FPS, Shot in the ‘Film’ colour profile, 12:1 Raw compression setting, the lens used was the Sigma Art 18-35mm F1.8 with no lighting just natural and restaurant lights. Definitely a run and gun situation with no time to light stuff, this is how some people will use the URSA most of the time…

These are just the unedited, ungraded files straight off the camera so excuse the dodgy moments where it looks like I don’t know what I’m doing! I don’t know of anyway of trimming these raw files to make them shorter without putting them through Resolve which would defeat the whole point of this so you get the luxury of seeing the full files in all their glory :-)

The first thing you will notice is how big the files are, they are pretty large but 12:1 isn’t too bad when compared to Pro Res 422. There are loads of good geeky articles out there comparing Raw file sizes this one from premium beat is good.

I hope this is helpful and have fun grading and seeing how the codec is to edit with!

It would be nice if you didn’t use any of the files in your own videos… I’m pretty sure no one would see a use for these in their own work but best to mention the copyright belongs to Fluxx Films. :-)

Thanks
